Aida Makoto

The non-thinker

27 June to 31 August 2014

Exhibition designed and built by le Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes.

Echoing the exhibition Samurai, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes has invited Japanese artist Aida Makoto to add her touch to several of the show’s spaces, in addition to the courtyard and museum.

Born in 1965, Makoto has developed a body of work since the early 90s, which is critical of traditional Japanese culture, its history, manga’s, wars, and workers,
stigmatizing the contradictions inherent in Japanese society, as well as the country’s politics and economy – particularly during the post-WWII economic boom and modernization.

Aida Makoto shakes up the attitudes and collective customs unconsciously shared by members of Japanese society, revealing the latter’s complexity, taboos and contradictions.
