Expression(s) décoloniale(s) - Presentation
Every historical narrative is a construct that reflects a particular perspective on the world, on oneself, and others. History museums are no exception to this rule.
Today, the need to consider human history as a global history is increasingly evident. Nevertheless, many objects and documents held in our collections are charged with a colonial perspective.
Questioning these pieces, deciphering the gaze that accompanied their acquisition, and taking a step back to assess their ongoing influence on our collective imagination, is the aim of the Decolonial Expression(s) event.
With this in mind, the Nantes History Museum has once again invited voices from elsewhere.
Brazilian artist Rosana Paulino and Senegalese photographer Omar Victor Diop interact with the works in the Museum’s collection, offering a nuanced interpretation where art becomes a springboard to the present.
Beninese historian Lylly Houngnihin, on the other hand, has selected some ten pieces as anchor points for an open-ended reflection, weaving resonances between continents and temporalities.
